Melissa Hellwig - Sustainability Consultant - blog Ecopraise |
A simple introduction - an almost 7-year resident of Canada from Australia, with a Masters of Environmental Management, a fledgling consultancy and a great big gripe - there's nothing much doing in Niagara with respect to sustainability, so far. That has to change.
There are a few good people working courageously, putting in many hours with little or no financial reward to ensure the rules of the planet are followed. Don't fiddle with the thermostat, don't poison air, food, water or children. Our governments are catching on, slowly, but in a cumbersome, cold business-as-usual kind of way. Schools are making some efforts and many platitudes.....Business is miming the words "green economy" but they are clutching to someone else's worn-out script like it's their first time on stage.
But the people, ah yes, society. They can feel it, though they are not sure what "it" is. Consumption patterns are changing. There is a pause in the air after they discuss the latest unseasonable/weird weather event, but it hasn't come out of the closet yet. The big cc. Like cancer, climate change is not really discussed outside the home. They want to share that they now put their lead batteries aside for hazardous waste. They are so earnest, yet so awkward about making change. Am I doing the right thing?????
So, I am making this a safe space, a place to share and a place to revel in the good news. Every month? We'll see.........
